As many of you may know, February is Heart Health Month. To assure a Healthy Heart — education, awareness, and actions to intervene are extremely important.

Fact is, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the USA and globally claiming more lives each year than all types of cancer, chronic lung disease, and accidents combined. Most of these deaths result from a heart attack in people with coronary artery disease.

As South Asians, we face a much higher risk and are contributing 60% of the burden of global heart disease with only 25% of the world population. And this is independent of where we live in the world.

Did you know that south Asians are:

  • 3-4X more likely to get heart disease?
  • 50% of the first heart attacks in south Asians occur under the age 50?

Dr. Harshad Sanghvi, MD, FACC, an experienced Cardiologist and Medical Director of our Lifestyle program, is sharing his expertise and knowledge to separate fact from fiction and debunk common heart myths.

As part of our “Health and Wellness Awareness – Education with a purpose” series, we plan to publish 2 Heart Health Myths and real facts every Friday during the month of February. We hope you will read and reflect on the facts surrounding heart disease and more importantly, act on improving your heart health.

ICC as a consortium partner of South Asian Heart Center is offering a proven program with documented results to South Asians in New England area. Over 128 community members from New England area have already joined the program and have benefited from it. South Asian Heart Center has been offering this program for the past 12 years and the evidence they have collected makes it clear that besides medical care, these risks and conditions can be improved by Lifestyle changes. To be effective these programs need to be culturally tailored, evidence-based and sustainable.
